Project: Thurgood Marshall Middle School

Location: New Orleans, LA

Division: Commercial

Contract Value: $750,000

Background Situation:

By almost any measure, Hurricane Katrina was the most devastating natural disaster in our nation’s history. Hundreds of thousands of people were displaced in a matter of days. One and a half years later there were still numerous large scale projects that had not even begun in an attempt to get New Orleans back on its feet. One of those projects was the reconstruction of Thurgood Marshall Middle School. Completely destroyed from the hurricane, Thurgood Marshall was on a fast track for reconstruction in time for the beginning of the new 2007-2008 school year.

Project Scope:

  • Jebco Heating and Air Conditioning was assigned as the mechanical contractor for the Thurgood Marshall project. Jebco was tasked with the replacement of flooded and aging mechanical equipment for the school. Jebco worked within extremely compressed timelines since the project had to be completed in time for the re-opening of the new school year. The scope of the project was a water source hot water heating and chilled water cooling solution including:
  • 12 ton rooftop unit electric heat with air conditioning
  • 2X1.5 million BTU hydronic boilers with fan coils for heating
  • 2X60 ton chillers for air conditioning
  • Split system condensing units
  • Emergency recovery unit
  • Automatic controls

Result

Resurrected as a charter school, Thurgood Marshall was completely finished for the new school year. Jebco completed its portion of the project ahead of schedule and within budget, under very difficult time constraints. The general contractor, CSI International stated, “Jebco performed flawlessly in this pivotal project for the District and the people of New Orleans.”
